But don’t worry!

Even though the Zales military discount is no longer in use, we did some research and found plenty of other ways you can save on your next Zales purchase.

A History of Zales

In 1924, William Zale, Morris Zale, and Ben Lipshy opened the first Zales Jewelers in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Little did they know their small store (that sold everything from jewelry to cameras, cookware, and small appliances) would eventually grow to be a nation-wide jewelry brand boasting over 1,700 different locations across the country.

Their “penny down and a dollar a week” credit policy soon set them apart from their competitors, propelling them to open up 12 new Zales locations by 1942.

World War II came and went with Zales continuing to provide Americans in Texas and Oklahoma with top-notch diamonds and jewelry.

By 1958, Zales had officially entered the ring of American businesses, trading its shares on the American Stock Exchange.

Fast forward to the 1960s, we see Zales opening up even more stores and branching out to other product categories like sporting goods, furniture, pharmaceuticals, shoes, and more.

Around this time Zales Jewelers becomes Zale Corporation.

Continuing to supply the American people with top-level products, Zale Corporation’s sales cross the $1 billion line in the 1980s.

In 1984, Zales earned extra bragging rights when they acquired the world’s largest internally flawless diamond at the time.

It was an impressive 890-carat stone aptly named the “Incomparable Diamond.”

By 1984, Zales was ready to expand on a larger level, so they acquired Gordon’s Jewelers, a jewelry store with 469 different chains operated out of Houston, Texas.

A year later, the company moved its headquarters to the town of Irving, Texas.

For Zales, the 90s were difficult years (and not just because of the JNCO Jeans, blue eye shadow, and mullets walking around!). In 1992, the company was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

However, Zales was able to rebuild and restructure its finances during this difficult time, which in the end, strengthened the corporation. By 1997, Zales was once again making annual sales of over $1.3 billion.

By the end of the decade, Zales Corporation launched out into an innovative, new chapter by opening Zales Outlet in 13 different locations nationwide and launching its first-ever online store in 1998.

The company continued to thrive, acquiring Piercing Pagoda and Peoples Jewellers of Canada between the years 1999-2000.

During the early 2000s, the online eCommerce platform became Zale’s primary focus of expansion as it launched gordonjewelers.com in 2007 and zalesoutlet.com in 2009, which was the 85th-anniversary year of the opening of the first Zales Jewelers store.

As Zales marched forth into the twenty-first century, the company continued to break new ground in the internet world by launching multi-channel online shopping platforms and sites geared towards serving its many loyal customers.

In 2014, Zales was purchased by Signet Jewelers Inc., a specialty retail jeweler.

Today, after nearly 100 years of business and over 1,700 store locations, Zales is considered one of the largest fine jewelers in the region.

They still provide Americans with outstanding diamonds and high-quality jewelry, just like they did way back in 1924.
