Old Navy / Gap Military Discount

Special Note: The Old Navy military discount can NOT be used online. However, click here to find out how to save instantly on your online order.

Old Navy and Gap are some of the most popular brands when it comes to jeans and casual wear.

And if you’re a person who’s actively serving in the military, you may be wondering if either of these brands offers any kind of military discount.

A quick search on Google shows that Old Navy does, in fact, offer a military discount.

With that said, it took some serious digging to figure out exactly what the discount was all about.

Multiple other sources report conflicting info about what the exact Old Navy military discount is all about.

Some said it was only available on the first day of the week, called “Military Mondays”.

Some claimed it was only available on the first day of the month.

Both of these turned out to be untrue…

To get the story straight, OMK reached out to Old Navy / GAP directly to get the actual policy in writing.

Here’s what they had to say:

“Thank you for your email and I’m sorry to hear there has been some confusion regarding our military discounts. We do offer a 10% off military discount to active, retired, and reserve US military personnel and family members with valid military ID. Customers must be present with their military ID to a store associate. Our military discount is currently only available at our stores not online as we need to verify a military ID. The discount is available every day at our stores and can be applied per purchase.”

How Come I Can’t Get The Discount Online?

The exclusion of the Old Navy / GAP military discount for online purchases is likely due to the difficulty of proving military status online.

Without the use of online verification programs such as ID.me or SheerID, it can be almost impossible to determine whether or not an online shopper is eligible for the military discount.

Are There Any Restrictions to In-Store Military Discounts?

We asked the representative for Old Navy / The GAP to clarify if there were any restrictions, or terms and conditions that needed to be met.

Here’s what she had to say:

Discount is valid for all active, retired and reserve US Military Personnel and family members. Customer must present a valid military ID at time of purchase. Valid at Old Navy stores in the US only. Not valid at Oldnavy.com. Discount cannot be applied to gift card purchases. No adjustments on previous purchases. Discount cannot be combined with other offers or discounts (including the Gap Inc. Employee discount)

Who can claim the military discount?

The only people mentioned in regard to the discount are those who have a military background.

This means that only active duty, reservist or guard, veteran/retired, and registered dependents may qualify for the discount.

First responders such as police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and correctional officers are not mentioned in regard to the discount.

This most likely means that only those with a military background can claim the discount and that first responders are excluded from the discount.

There’s also no mention of family members or friends, so it’s most likely because only the one with the military discount can claim it.

More often than not, stores won’t allow for military discounts to be transferred to other shoppers; the person eligible for the discount must make the purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Can those who have been dishonorably discharged claim the discount?

Though Old Navy doesn’t give an answer one way or another, it’s most likely not the case.

When it comes to military discounts, the norm is that active duty, reservist or guard, veteran/retired, and registered dependents can claim the discount.

When stores do offer an online verification form to help online shoppers claim the discount, dishonorably discharged usually isn’t an option to select on those forms.

It’s worth calling Old Navy’s customer service number if it’s something you really want to inquire about, but the likelihood of someone who was dishonorably discharged being able to claim the discount is low.

Can this discount be combined with other discounts?

Again, Old Navy isn’t crystal clear on this, but it is likely.

Most stores do allow offers, sales, promotions, and discounts to stack and be used in conjunction with each other.

The common practice is that a certain number of coupons and discounts can be applied to a purchase before some start being bounced off the subtotal.

However, it is also common for stores to only let one discount bring down the price of a subtotal.

Yet in cases such as these, stores oftentimes make an exception when one of the discounts being claimed is the military discount.

All that considered, it’s quite likely that the military discount can be stacked and combined with other discounts.

Still, it’s definitely worth asking at the checkout line.

It doesn’t hurt to be prepared and do some math in your head to see what discounts would take the most off your purchase total.

Conclusion

It’s great that Old Navy offers a military discount!

While it’s unfortunate that they handcuff shoppers a bit by only making the discount available in stores, it’s still more than what some other stores do for vets and military men and women.

Claiming the discount is also quite easy, as all it involves is showing your ID to the cashier upon checkout.

It’s important to ask all your questions regarding the discount before checking out — such as whether or not it applies to those who have been dishonorably discharged or if it can be combined with other discounts — so that you aren’t scrambling right before you have to pay!

You can always call customer service ahead of time as well with your questions. Good luck and happy shopping!
